Yesterday, we took Connor fishing off the bank of Lake Amistad, a sprawling reservoir fed by the Rio Grande and Devils rivers. Shared by the United States and Mexico, the lake is made up of 850 miles of shoreline, 540 of which are in Texas. The waters are clear and deep, making it a popular destination for fishermen. The most common type of fish found in the area include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, blue catfish and tilapia.
After several minutes of fishing, Connor reeled in his first catch. It was a tiny brim, but you would have thought Connor had caught a huge bass. He was so excited he could hardly contain himself. He kept laughing and saying, "Look, a fishy!" He even held the fish in his little hands after Jimmy removed it from the hook. Then, following Jimmy's instructions, he tossed the fish back into the lake. It took him a while to realize what he had just done. Afterwards, he turned to me and said, "Oh no, oh no. It's gone. The fishy is gone."
Before Connor caught the fish I had joked with Jimmy about taking whatever he caught to a taxidermy and having it mounted to a plaque. After seeing him a little disappointed by the fact that the fish he had just thrown into the water wasn't coming back, I had kind of hoped we would have kept it for the taxidermy after all.
As we were leaving the lake we ran into a friend of ours who was also taking his two sons fishing. So, we decided to stay a little longer and fish with the three of them. Connor liked the company and enjoyed watching everyone cast their lines into the water. He didn't fish as much the second time. Instead, he waded in the water and munched on some of Parker's fruit puffs.
As for Parker, he enjoyed sitting on the rocks with me and taking in his surroundings. He pulled at the grass some and even put his toes in the lake. He was very interested in everything that was going on and didn't fuss the entire 3.5 hours we spent at Lake Amistad.
Don't expect any tall tales to come from this fishing trip. I've got pictures!

At least you got a picture of his first fish even if you didn't keep it.
